Nowadays, dress trousers are no longer the exclusive preserve of men. This iconic fashion piece has become feminized and is now worn to the office as well as for an evening out. At Devernois, we design our tailored garments using quality, sustainable materials. Cigarette, slim, straight, or loose-fitting, the women's tuxedo trousers come in numerous styles and models, with elegant and timeless designs.

Everything you need to know about women's tuxedo trousers

A garment with a masculine design, the tuxedo trouser is becoming democratized and has become a chic piece that every woman wants in her wardrobe. When and how did the dress trouser become accessible to women? What are the trendy tailored trouser models? Would you like more details? Follow the guide.

The history of tuxedo trousers reimagined for women

The tuxedo ("smoking" in French) takes its name from the "smoking room," a place of relaxation formerly reserved for men. This chic outfit, composed of straight dress trousers, a jacket, and a wide waistband, was also worn during social evenings. It was customary for women to wear a long dress.

In the 1960s, the great couturier Yves Saint Laurent revolutionized dress codes by adapting the design of the traditional men's tuxedo to the female silhouette. The first women's trouser suit was thus born. Throughout the ages, this timeless suit has become a symbol of freedom.

The importance of the fabric used in making women's tuxedo trousers

Wool fabric remains the most prized material in the making of tuxedo trousers for both men and women. This natural fiber is rarely used on its own. You will generally find it combined with silk or cotton. For a summery trouser suit, opt for a wool and linen blend. Synthetic materials are generally reserved for low-cost, industrially produced tailored trousers.

The great diversity of tuxedo trousers available for women

Solid black and midnight blue are the most common colors for tuxedo trousers. These timeless colors ensure great elegance in any circumstance. However, it is not rare today to see women's tuxedo trousers sporting bright colors or patterns, with a much less classic style, but still just as chic.

Regarding the cuts of tailored trousers, you are spoiled for choice. It is up to you to select the tuxedo trousers that best suit your silhouette and the occasion. Among the most popular models, you will find:

  • straight-leg women's tuxedo trousers, a timeless classic;
  • slim-fit tailored trousers, for an elegant and feminine look;
  • cigarette tuxedo trousers, to enhance your silhouette;
  • wide-leg dress trousers, for a trendy and chic style.

The women's tuxedo trouser size guide

Are you hesitating between two sizes for women's tuxedo trousers? Take a tape measure. Wrap the tape measure around the thinnest part of your waist and take the measurement. Then, measure your hip circumference at the fullest part of your hips. You can then refer to our size guide table.

36 38 40 42 44 46 48 50 52
Chest circumference (cm) 86 90 94 98 102 106 110 116 122
Waist circumference (cm) 68 72 76 80 84 88 92 98 104
Hip circumference (cm) 92 96 100 104 108 112 116 122 128

This table is provided for information purposes only. If you are between two sizes of tailored trousers, we recommend that you choose the larger one. This size guide also applies to the other garments in our collection: skirts, dresses, t-shirts, blouses, knitwear, jackets, etc.

Our care tips for your women's tuxedo trousers

You certainly don't wear tuxedo trousers every day. However, when the desire arises to assert your style with your favorite dress trousers, you want to find them just as they were on the first day. It is therefore essential to maintain them well and store them correctly so that they remain like new for a long time.

Cleaning and ironing women's tuxedo trousers

Whether for a complete cleaning or a simple ironing, entrust your clothes to a professional. The safest and most effective method to maintain your women's tuxedo trousers is undoubtedly dry cleaning. Dry cleaning preserves the wool or silk fibers. If you choose to wash your tuxedo trousers in the machine, prefer a delicate cycle (30°C maximum).

Except in the case of a stain, quality tuxedo trousers do not need to be washed after every wear. Spacing out washes helps to keep the fabric of your tailored trousers in perfect condition. The same goes for a tuxedo jacket or a blazer. Between two cycles, you can brush your trousers (and your blazer if you own a complete suit).

If you have to iron your women's tuxedo trousers yourself, be careful with the iron's heat. Set it to the wool or silk position, with maximum steam so as not to mark the fabric. You can also use a garment steamer. Proceed in the same way with your tuxedo jacket if necessary.

Storing your women's tailored trousers

Do you own a complete tuxedo, jacket and trousers? Avoid metal hangers. Opt for a shaped hanger, slightly padded. Then place your tailored trousers and jacket set in a cotton garment bag to protect it from dust. To store women's tuxedo trousers alone, use a specific hanger.

You have the choice between a clip model and a horizontal bar model. With the first, your tailored trousers are hung by the bottom of the legs. The weight of the waistband and pockets thus stretches the fabric and prevents the formation of wrinkles. The second requires careful folding of your tuxedo trousers, laid flat with the front and back creases aligned.

Complete your wardrobe by purchasing straight-leg trousers or leather leggings from our women's collection. Do you prefer fitted knit trousers? We offer a wide choice of very trendy Milano knit trousers. Also discover our selection of dresses and skirts and our leather shoes for women.
